A Sporting Chance: Sport NZ Community Resilience Fund Offers Immediate Relief for Sporting Organisations

20 May 2020

The sports & recreation sector has been tackled hard by COVID-19 and in response, the Government announced a $265m recovery package on Sunday 17th May.

Over the next four years the Government will invest in three areas:

  • $83 million in short-term support to help sport and recreation organisations at all levels get through the initial impact of COVID-19.
  • $104 million to help the sector rebuild in the medium term including so national and regional sports organisations can make changes in order to operate successfully in the post-pandemic environment. This will include supporting new operating models and more collaboration.
  • $78 million for innovative approaches to delivering play, active recreation and sport into the future.  The world is changing, and this funding will help us use new technology and research in the rebuild from COVID-19 to modernise the sporting sector.

BDO will provide more details as to what these measures will look like and the application process when more information becomes available. In the meantime, eligible organisations may be able to seek immediate relief via the Community Resilience Fund.

What is the Sport NZ Community Resilience Fund?

The Sport NZ Community Resilience Fund has been set up to offer immediate help for clubs and regional organisations to stay financially viable in the wake of COVID-19.

How Much Can Be Applied For?

  • Regional Sport and recreation organisations (with member organisations) can apply for up to $40,000.

  • Local clubs/associations (with individual members) can apply for up to $1,000 in support.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

The fund is intended for the local and regional organisations that form part of Sport NZ’s networks. It is not intended for organisations that already receive investment from Sport NZ.  It has been recognised that there may be some Maori organisations that are not affiliated to national partners, and as a result endorsement criteria have been included within the guidelines.

Organisations will need to be able to show that they are already financially negatively impacted by Covid-19 and/or will be for the period April to June 2020.

What Will the Fund Cover?

The money will cover fixed administration costs such as rent, insurance, power, some accounting costs, etc – but excludes wages.

How and When Can Eligible Organisations Apply?

Eligible organisations can apply now via their Regional Sports Trust.
